This tiny, environmentally planned community set on a particularly wild and windswept stretch of the northern Sonoma County coast is an ideal getaway for lovers of architecture and nature.
Developed in the 1960s on coastal lands once seasonally visited by the Pomo peoples, The Sea Ranch blends modern design with natural elements in a harmonious, environmentally respectful way. The iconic buildings, clad in weathered local redwood, seem to grow organically from the rugged landscape.
Things to Do in The Sea Ranch
A day trip to The Sea Ranch provides plenty of opportunities to explore beaches, public access trails and the 195-acre Gualala Point Regional Park. Another good reason to visit is the Sea Ranch Chapel, a whimsical architectural gem that resembles a bird in flight or a cresting wave. The tranquil interiors — featuring colorful stained glass, local stone and a plaster ceiling sculpted into the shape of a flower — invite quiet reflection and an appreciation of the natural environment.

Where to Stay
The Sea Ranch stretches 10 miles along Highway 1, and includes private homes and the recently renovated Sea Ranch Lodge. It’s estimated that about half of the houses in The Sea Ranch are rented out as vacation homes.
Renting a home allows use of the community's tennis courts, Scottish-style golf course and 50 miles of private trails that offer panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, massive sea rocks and amazing sunsets. Visit during the winter to take in peak whale watching and enjoy the coast at its most peaceful.
