Sonoma County cautions about overcrowded beaches over Labor Day Weekend

Sonoma County, September 3, 2020 – In preparation of the long weekend Sonoma County Tourism (SCT) invites travelers to enjoy visiting area wineries, shop in charming small towns and dine outdoors at world class restaurants, but to not visit area beaches and waterways.  

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic Sonoma County beach communities have seen an overwhelming number of visitors with extremely negative impact on the shoreline and neighborhoods. To help mitigate this damage, Sonoma County is asking visitors to respect these natural resources and avoid the beaches on the coast and along the Russian River this holiday weekend. 

“We understand that with soaring inland temperatures and a long holiday weekend, people will want to come to a cooler climate and enjoy the beauty of Sonoma County’s coast and rivers.  We are simply asking that people plan to have other experiences this Labor Day weekend,” says Claudia Vecchio, president/CEO, Sonoma County Tourism.  “Thankfully Sonoma County has so much to offer, and the beautiful weather will make outdoor wine tastings, dining, and outdoor recreation such as hiking and biking a great way to spend the long weekend.”

SCT reminds visitors to make reservations at local businesses before arrival. While indoor business operations are closed, outdoor services may be open with modifications like lesser seating space. See trip idea suggestions.

SCT is asking everyone to review the “Safe Travels Promise.” The goal of the ‘promise’ is two-fold: welcome visitors to Sonoma County, and encourage high standards of hygiene, observation of all local health regulations required in Sonoma County, and commitment to being responsible travelers. Visitors are asked to Be Smart. Be Safe. Be Kind. Stay Healthy. 

In an effort of a better stewardship SCT developed last fall the ‘Traveling Kindly’ pledge which invites visitors and locals alike to make a positive impact to the health and well-being of the thriving local communities, abundant experiences and breath-taking natural landscapes.
